Robert Goodman

Brother of Amos I. Goodman

Robert Goodman, Sr., b. Feb 27, 1775 in VA, and later of Wilson Co., TN,  was the son of John James Goodman, and brother of Amos I. and Stephen Goodman of Barren / Hart Co., KY, and possibly of Arthur Goodman, also of Barren / Hart and later in Greyson Co., KY. His birth date is recorded in his brother,  John Goodman's bible record.

Robert is mentioned in the 1873 letter of Robert Hope Goodman of Atlanta, as the 2nd son of his grandfather, James Goodman, who was actually John Goodman or John James Goodman, and age 16 when James, John and Robert Goodman first went to Wilson Co., TN, John being 18 and b. 1772, and Robert turning 16 just a couple of months after the court order, that makes the year they went to Wilson Co. early 1791, which corresponds almost exactly to the Greene Co., TN 1790 court record of when the Goodman children, including Robert, were placed in the care of John & Joseph Richardson of that county. Apparently, Robert, being 16 at the time, was either later exempted from that order (perhaps confirming that order having been contested, per Greene TN, Co Court Minutes #/207), "John Goodwin (sp. Goodman?) and his wife were to appear at the next court and show cause why their children should not be bound out", or Robert chose to ignore it to go with his father and older brother to Wilson Co.

Robert Goodman Sr., temporarily returned to Bedford Co., VA in 1795 to marry Ann, daughter of Zephaniah Neal, and they lived near the Neal families in Wilson Co., TN, also the home county of Claiborne Goodman, son of Benjamin and Maria Goodman of Louisa Co., VA and later of Granville Co., NC.

Robert and Ann Goodman had issue:

Robert, Jr., b. about 1799, who married Martha Richardson 20 Feb 1820, and they had issue Amos B., John J., Elizabeth, William Carroll, and Mary Elizabeth.

Albert, b. about 1801, who m. Laura Ragsdale. They had issue William C., John M., James Henderson, Jancy Jane, Albert W. and Sarah A.

Rhoda, b about 1807.

Stephen, b. about 1815, married Malinda Clemmons, and they had issue: John, Jeptha H., Elizabeth, Sarah A., Henry, William S., Frances, and Robert Jackson.

William S., b. about 1826, who m. Martha Lane.

Jesse, b. about 1826.
