Capt. William Goodman

An account by Jacob Sitgraves, Pvt., in testimony of his qualification for land under his Rev. War Warrant No. 1972. In part: " I enlisted, and was assigned to Capt. Goodman’s Co., then marched toward Charleston, SC, and on the way was engaged in battle at Eutaw Springs, where Capt. Goodman was killed with many of his men. ...". (The "Tennessee Genealogical Records: Records of Early Settlers from State and County Archives", by Edythe Rucker Whitley, pub. Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore 1985, p. 80). This engagement occurred Sept 8, 1781, and also included Col. Frances Marion, "The Swamp Fox", and Col. Thomas Henderson of Granville Co., who was wounded. A Lt. Henry Goodman was also at that battle, but apparently survived unscathed, as he is not listed on the returns of those killed or wounded. This Capt. Wm. Goodman was of the 4th NC, Continental Line. He was commissioned by the NC Provincial Congress, 4 Apr. 1776, and was from the Edenton District. This William Goodman was probably the son of Henry Goodman of Gates County, NC, since Henry’s brothers William and Joel had sons named William, that were both known to be living after 1781. Or, he may have been the son of the Lt. Col. Henry Goodman of Dobbs Co. Lt. Joel Lewis, brother of William Terrill Lewis, also served in the 4th NC regiment of Capt. William Goodman, and was probably the Joel Lewis later at King's Mountain. See also: Davidson Co. TN page.

Other Rev. War pensions and warrants of interest:

Samuel Goodman, Corporal, served on the Continental line, registered his Warrant No 633, for 375 acres, issued 18 Nov 1820.

Jacob Goodman, NC Line, enlisted at Mecklenburg, NC, the parent county of Cabarrus Co. He applied for a pension in Monroe Co., KY, at age 70 in 1832. This is apparently the Jacob Goodman referred to in a letter from JAS Goodman to Lyman Draper ("Draper Papers"). Warrant No. 167, no acreage mentioned, which was issued to Pvt. John Dean, was transferred by his heir and brother, William Dean, to Robert W. Goodman of Raleigh.
